Camera Operator

Camera operators play a vital role within the camera department on featured films. They work alongside the Director and The Director of Photography, they carry out their instructions accurately regarding shot composition and development. It’s the camera operator’s responsibility to make sure the camera moves in key to the narrative flow of feature films. The work is physically demanding, it requires a high level of strength and stamina. The hours are 12-14 a day and sometimes forgiven travel may be required involving long periods spent away from base.

Its a Camera Operators job to ensure that the camera and equipment are prepared for the required set up, making sure they keep alert for any last minute changes. You must be able to multitask and be able to watch, listen and think on your feet while carrying out complex technical tasks.

Camera operators begin their careers as camera trainees to runners. They then progress to being a 2nd AC then as they gain more experience to a 1st AC. They build up their experience and achieve high levels of competence when operating a variety of cameras, this will then get them to a DoP or a camera operator.
