Film Editor

Film editors are a part of the creative post-production process of film making. They work closely with the Director to make sure they  edit the footage in the way he Director wants. The film editor works in the cutting room which can sometimes be on set, they work with raw footage they collect the best takes and edit them into sequences that all work together to create a finished film. They sometimes work with the scenes at the end of the film before working on those at the beginning.

Editors will progress from starting as a runner to then working up to Trainees, Second Assistant, First Assistant and then they will eventually become Editors. Because of the increasing use of digital editing techniques this has changed the film industry. Because of this Second Assistants are now only employed on big budget films. Assistants who are very experienced may also work as Editors on short films, this enables them to showcase their talents.

To get an Editing job you need to be able to use a variety of computer editing software. They also need to be creative under pressure, have a good imagination and a good understanding of narrative.
